Bur. Believed to have been buried in a civilian cemetery in what is now Somalia.

Joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in January 1915, came to England with his Battalion in June 1915 and after training went to France in August 1915. Killed in action in the front line trenches at Hill 60, Zillebeke by enemy shell fire Hooge, Belgium 26^th April 1916 during the First Battle of Ypres.

Son of Capt. & Mrs E N Hill of ‘Neilgherry’ Sunte Avenue, Lindfield.

Captain Hill was late of the 30^th Regiment of Foot, served at the siege of Sebastopol from 8th February 1855 to 5th August 1855 and at the Assault on the Redan on the 18th June 1855 and Crimean War. He was 81 years old in 1916.

Private Hill had lived in Canada for 8 years.

Royal Navy. HMS ‘Hawke’

Lost when the Cruiser was torpedoed on the 15^th October 1914.

The Cruiser HMS Hawke was torpedoed in the North Sea by U.9,

(Captain Otto Weddigen,) which also sank ‘Aboukir’, ‘Cressy’ and

‘Hogue’ on 22^nd September 1914.

HMS Hawke lost 524 men out of a ship’s company of 595.

His wife later remarried and resided in Harlow. Gardener to the Rt Hon Sir Fleetwood-Edwards of The Manor House, The High Street, Lindfield.

Resident of The Manor House Cottage, came to Lindfield in 1907.
